Course Summary

Our public services course aims to build practical skills, knowledge and insight into the public services sector, with a particular focus on uniformed services such as the police, fire and rescue and armed forces.

This vocational qualification is designed for individuals passionate about serving their communities through roles in the uniformed public service sectors. Whether you are aiming for a future in the police, fire and rescue, ambulance services, the armed forces or other public service career, this course offers a hands-on learning experience

Course Details

Students will engage in a mix of classroom-based study and practical activities, gaining essential knowledge, skills and understanding relevant to these sectors. The curriculum is career focused, and work related, helping students build their confidence needed to thrive in the demanding service roles.

You’ll benefit from a variety of enrichment experiences including trips to police and fire stations, military bases, and courts, alongside visits from guest speakers currently serving in the public services sector. These experiences give you first-hand knowledge of the working environment and what it takes to succeed.

Level 1 is very practical combined with some theory, focusing heavily on fitness, maths/English skills will be employed, but activities will also include map reading, teambuilding and outdoor activities.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Entry requirements

Level 1 – 3 GCSEs at grade 2 or above

Your next steps...

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University.

Potential careers include: Armed and Emergency services, Coaching, Nursing, Outdoor Education Instructors, Teaching and Coaching.
