Course Summary

Engineering is exciting, rewarding and creative. If you are analytical, imaginative and innovative, have a passion for problem solving and a keen eye for detail then you’re this course is for you. If your future goal is to study engineering at university or to go on to an apprenticeship then the Cambridge Technical in Engineering is an ideal course for you.

The essential parts of becoming any engineer is your understanding of both Mathematics and Science and because of this they are central in this course.

Course Details

Engineering is based in the Maths buildings and will be taught by highly experienced teachers. It includes teachers with Engineering degrees and a range of specialists in Maths, Science and Business. The engineering lesson will be taught in different areas of the college depending on the unit and all lessons will be relevant to engineering scenarios. Due to each engineering unit requiring different specialist teachers you will always have a teacher who is an expert in their subject area. Lessons will include a variety of group, paired and individual work; resources you will draw on include textbooks, exam questions and jigsaw/domino/card matching activities as well as websites.

Support outside lessons is available, both informally and formally. Regular “clinic” sessions are run during the college week and all of the department are available for support at lunchtime.

This 2 year course is split into 4 compulsory units

Compulsory Units:

Unit 1 - Engineering Principles (exam)

Students will develop the skills and knowledge required to solve mechanical, electrical and electronic-based engineering problems by applying appropriate mathematical and physical science principles.

Unit 2 - Engineering Applications (exam)

In this unit students will explore how advances in modern technology are reshaping how a wide range of engineering sectors function. They will also explore how engineers use their understanding of materials and processes to devise sustainable solutions to engineering problems.

Unit 3 - Engineering Design (coursework)

Students will create a design solution in response to an engineering design challenge by developing three-dimensional (3D) models and two-dimensional (2D) detailed drawings including the use of a computer-aided design (CAD) system and other modelling techniques.

Unit 4 - Engineering Project (coursework)

Students apply project management principles to undertake an individual project and will develop conceptual or practical solutions to a chosen engineering problem related to a relevant engineering specialist area.
