Course Summary

This course is designed for students who would like a career in sport including those students who are still unsure as to what area of sport this could be. The course specialises in coaching, sports development, fitness, nutrition, teaching, sports rehabilitation and business. It is suitable for students who are aiming to go on to university and study a sports related degree including Sports Rehabilitation; those looking to gain access onto Higher Training Apprenticeships; those looking to get into PE teaching, to gain employment within the Leisure and Recreation Industry including Leisure Centre Management, Sports Coaching, Fitness Instructor.

Course Details

Physical Education, Sport and Dance has always played an important role here at Wyke Sixth Form College, and although we are not a sports college we have twice been crowned “National Sports College of the year”. Students acquire so many experiences from competing in National championships to competing against fellow students in an intra-tutor league, whatever the level and capability, there is something for everyone. The Sports Department has seen exceptional success both academically and competitively. Not only does the department offer both A Level and CTEC courses to accommodate a number of students across all assessment methods it is also ranked in the top one percent nationally. Subjects are taught by A Level and CTEC Level 3 specialist teachers and the coaching staff are of the highest calibre. Each member of staff is trained and dedicated to not only reach academic success but also reach the highest accolade possible when it comes to competing.

In 2019 the department won a Pearson National Teaching Award and were announced best FE teaching team in the country.

CTEC EXTENDED DIPLOMA (3 A LEVEL EQUIVALENT)

This course includes the Extended Certificate and Diploma units plus:

UNIT 6: GROUP EXERCISE TO MUSIC

Students will be introduced to the different types of group exercise to music. Planning group exercise sessions considering the needs of participants.

UNIT 7: IMPROVING FITNESS FOR SPORT

Students will explore the various components of fitness and the methods of training used to enhance these. You will plan and deliver fitness training programmes to meet the needs of individuals.

UNIT 12: NUTRITION AND DIET FOR SPORT & EXERCISE

Students will gain an understanding of what is meant by the term ‘balanced diet’, the relationship between energy intake and energy expenditure and how this changes depending on the sport or physical activity taking place.

UNIT 14: WORKING IN ACTIVE LEISURE

Students will explore the day-to-day running duties that are carried out within an active leisure environment, ensuring that it is fit for purpose

UNIT 17: SPORTS INJURIES AND REHABILITATION

Students will explore how to recognise and treat common sports injuries both immediately and through rehabilitation programmes.

Unit 18: Practical Skills in Sport and Physical Activity

Students will undertake a variety of sporting activities, gaining an understanding of the practical skills needed to be successful.

UNIT 21: THE BUSINESS OF SPORT

Students will learn about the structure and purpose of different sports businesses, who their customers are and how they use staff and volunteers to run their organisation and meet their goals.

HOW THE COURSE IS DELIVERED

The course is delivered through a series of theoretical and practical based lessons. The Extended certificate course will see you undertake 4 lessons per week and the Extended Diploma course will be conducted via 12 lessons per week

How will it be delivered and assessed?

A combination of internal and external assessed coursework and an external exam - 24% exam, 76% coursework

Your next steps...

Students could progress straight into employment in the leisure and recreation field. Many students progress onto degrees or Higher apprenticeships in Sports Therapy, Personal Training, Sports Studies, Coaching, Human Movement Studies, Leisure and Recreation courses or train to be Physical Education teachers. This course is also a suitable basis for anyone wishing to continue on to Physiotherapy, Sports Science and Sports Retail; or those looking to enter the Uniformed Services.
