Course Summary

This hands-on, creative course at Grimsby Institute will introduce you to the full spectrum of photographic techniques, from the magic of darkroom development to cutting-edge digital editing.

You’ll explore a wide range of photographic styles and genres, learning how to capture compelling images for artistic, commercial, and editorial purposes. The course is 100% coursework based, encouraging creative freedom and development of your personal creative visions. Whether you’re interested in fashion shoots, documentary storytelling, or fine art exhibitions, this course will give you the tools and confidence to take the next step.

You will explore avenues of presentation and digital printing, ultimately leading to your final year exhibition, previously held at venues such as Grimsby Minster and the Turntable Gallery.

Through practical workshops, real-world projects, and expert support, you’ll build an impressive portfolio that showcases your unique style and prepares you for further study or a rewarding creative career.

Course Details

Analogue photographic practice (film and darkroom) – Master the traditional process of shooting on film and hand-developing your prints in a professional darkroom

Digital photographic practice – Learn to capture, edit, and enhance digital images using DSLR and mirrorless cameras alongside editing tools like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom

Studio photography – Explore lighting setups and creative techniques in a studio environment, ideal for portraits, fashion, and commercial work

Digital media – Understand how photography works across digital platforms, from online publishing to multimedia integration

Digital printing – Get hands-on experience with professional printing equipment to produce high-quality photographic prints for portfolios and exhibitions

Industry skills – Build transferable skills including client communication, portfolio presentation, and an understanding of photography as a business

Photographic experimental practices – Push creative boundaries with alternative processes, mixed media, and conceptual approaches to photography

Commercial, Fine Art, Documentary and Fashion photography – Gain insight and practical experience in these key genres to help define your photographic style

Publishing – Discover how to prepare your work for publication in both print and digital formats, including layout and design fundamentals

Editing skills – Develop your post-production expertise, learning how to professionally retouch and manipulate images to meet creative briefs

How will it be delivered and assessed?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Level 3 – 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths
