Course Summary
This is a great course choice if you are confident of achieving a very high grade at GCSE Mathematics.
It is designed for students who really enjoy Mathematics and want to widen their experience. It both deepens and broadens mathematical knowledge, and develops a wide range of ideas alongside A Level Mathematics. In particular, the course is highly suitable if you wish to study Mathematics or a related STEM subject at a Russell Group University, such as Physics, Engineering, Computing or Economics.
Course Details
We are a team of highly experienced teachers of Mathematics, teaching in dedicated mathematics classrooms. All of the teachers in the department are specialists in teaching at A Level, and are highly motivated to help you to reach your potential.
This course is more difficult than A Level Mathematics:
It explores a wider range of mathematical topics, some of which will be completely different to what you have covered before, and it demands a robust approach to mathematical techniques and notation.
The Pure Mathematics unit in year 1 introduces ideas such as complex numbers and matrices. It also builds on your skills from GCSE and A Level Mathematics including Algebra, Graphs and Trigonometry.
In year 2, Further Mathematics takes forward ideas such as complex numbers and matrices introduced in the first year, and introduces ideas such as differential equations. It also expands the algebraic and calculus work of A Level Mathematics.
While many of the ideas you will meet in pure mathematics are interesting in their own right, they also serve as an important foundation for other branches of mathematics. As well as studying Further Pure topics, you will also extend the ideas from Statistics studied in A Level Mathematics, and will be introduced to Discrete mathematics, which focuses on modelling real-life problems with algorithms, and lays the foundations for Group Theory, an area often encountered in university level mathematics.
How is the course delivered?
Each group is taught by a specialist Mathematics teacher each year. You will have one teacher for the Further Mathematics A Level and another for your A Level Mathematics lessons.
Your A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics classes will be paired together, so your class for A Level Mathematics will consist of only Further Mathematics students. This allows us to extend some of your study of Mathematics to better complement the Further Mathematics content, and to adapt the curriculum to support both courses.
Further Mathematics can be taken as a one- or two-year course, and can be studied as part of a three- or four-A Level programme, following a conversation at enrolment about which option is right for you. All students on the A Level Further Mathematics course take AS Level Further Mathematics at the end of year 1, and those students who are studying four A Levels have the choice to continue into year 2 or to stop after AS Level. In year two, there are three exams at the end of the year for A Level Further Mathematics.
Support outside lessons is available at a lunch time drop-in, with dedicated sessions for Further Mathematics several times per week.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
100% Examination

Your next steps...
Having a qualification in Further Mathematics in addition to your A Level Mathematics will give you an advantage in a variety of careers and is critical for some degrees. The greater experience of the sophisticated algebraic, statistical and mechanical ideas will increase your ability to succeed in Higher Education courses which make use of this level of Mathematics. These courses or careers include: Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computing and ICT.
